Jan. 1997 to the present: Co-Owner, Great Tapes for Kids, a small web-based retail store specializing in wonderful, hard-to-find children's video and audio story tapes.
Jan. 1991 to the present: Consultant, Lecturer, and Independent Author, including quality assurance and project management contracting at Lotus Development Corp. on GUI interfaces for UNIX. Co-wrote over two dozen books, including several bestsellers, for beginner and intermediate computer users. These include The Internet For Dummies, Internet: The Complete Reference, Windows XP: The Complete Reference, and Poor Richard's Building Online Communities.
Jan. 1988 to Dec. 1990: Manager of Technical Services, Javelin Products Group, Information Resources, Inc. Wrote manuals and technical bulletins, then trained a documentation staff. Found and tracked software bugs, created automatic testing and timing programs, then trained a QA staff. Managed 3Com network. Designed, wrote, and published Javelin News for 36,000 users. Wrote and taught two-day "Introduction to Javelin" course to staff and customers.
Feb. 1985 to Jan. 1988: Independent Microcomputer Consultant. Consulted at 15 companies in the New York and Boston areas. Responsibilities included: creating and teaching courses for PC users in various locations in the U.S. and abroad, such as one-day courses on single programs and four-day courses on computer literacy for engineers; planning and implementing installation of PCs for groups of first-time users; one-on-one user support; and database design and implementation. At American International Group (a multinational insurance conglomerate), established a PC training operation, wrote course materials, trained instructors, and scheduled courses on a variety of PC software.
March 1982 to Feb. 1985: Manager of Office Systems, Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc. Established standards for, recommended, approved, purchased, installed, and supported microcomputer and word processing hardware and software for all users in the corporation (300+ users). Managed staff of three. PC applications included automated cash management, analysis of audience response to preview screenings, 3270 emulation, and file transfer to IBM mainframe.
Dec. 1978 to Feb. 1982: European Manager, Center for Professional Advancement. Established and managed a new European division in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, for technical seminar company. Designed direct mail campaigns with Dutch advertising agency.
President and Newsletter Editor, NYPC (New York IBM PC Users Group), April 1984-September 1986.
