Redfield conflates human consciousness with Western consciousness here. He ignores the popularization of Eastern ideas in the West over the last two centuries.

He's a little too quick to declare that the battle for material comfort is over. However, Redfield is right that people in our educated classes stress themselves over material issues that are increasingly tangential to their survival. That we have lost touch with the sources of meaning is essentially what Moore is saying in Care of the Soul.
